A family-run dessert shop specializing in chocolate-dipped frozen bananas has opened at 369 Main St. in downtown Dunedin.

Monkey Mike’s, the creation of husband-and-wife duo Michael and Krista Rager and their daughters Mikayla, 13, and Brielle, 10, serves frozen bananas on a stick hand-dipped in chocolate and loaded with toppings like candy, nuts and caramel drizzle, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

The concept is simple. Customers pick a banana size, choose a chocolate coating and pile on toppings. The menu offers three formats: the Dipped Banana (whole), the Mini Dipped Banana (half) and the Banana Pop (a quarter). All can be served on a stick or built in a cup. Beyond bananas, guests can customize a Cheesecake on a Stick or an Ice Cream Sandwich on a Stick with their choice of toppings.

“We wanted Monkey Mike’s to be one of those places that makes people smile the minute they walk through the door,” co-owner Michael Rager said in a news release. “There’s something nostalgic about a frozen banana on a stick. We wanted to bring that feeling back and create a place where families like ours can make new memories together.”

The shop also takes a zero-waste approach to its main ingredient. Rather than tossing banana peels, Monkey Mike’s converts them into a product called Banana Boost Plant Food. A portion of every bag sold goes to Palm Harbor’s Suncoast Primate Sanctuary, a nonprofit that provides lifelong care for rescued primates and other animals. The donation amount per bag has not been disclosed.

Monkey Mike’s is holding a grand opening celebration from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, featuring a gift card giveaway and live steel drum music. The first 50 customers will receive a free Banana Pop.

Menu listings show bananas, ice cream sandwiches and dessert cups for $6, while cheesecake on a stick and the Banana of the Week are $7. Regular hours are 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The shop is located at 369 Main St.
