School board approves Bay Point K-8 name
In other Pinellas County Schools news, the school board approved the name Bay Point K-8 for the new school combining Bay Point Elementary and Bay Point Middle in St. Petersburg. The district announced the decision Oct. 14.
The merger is part of a broader wave of school closures and consolidations driven by enrollment decline. The board voted at its Oct. 13 meeting to close additional schools and restructure others, St. Pete Catalyst reported.
Bay Point Elementary will move onto the middle school campus. The combined K-8 school is set to open for the 2027-28 academic year.
More than 200 people submitted name suggestions, with about half calling for some form of "Bay Point" to remain, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Other suggestions included naming the school after Vyrle Davis, described as the district's first Black area superintendent; Lew Williams, who served as a teacher, principal, area superintendent and school board member; and Watson Haynes, a pastor, activist and Pinellas Urban League leader.
The board chose Bay Point K-8. The vote tally was not available in district records reviewed for this article.
In February, the board voted to close Pinellas Park's Cross Bayou Elementary and Gulfport's Disston Academy at the end of the 2025-26 academic year, according to St. Pete Catalyst.
