Liam Peterson heard his name called on baseball's biggest stage Saturday, and Palm Harbor heard it too.

The 21-year-old right-hander, who grew up in Palm Harbor and pitched at Calvary Christian Academy in Clearwater before starring at the University of Florida, was selected 19th overall by the Cleveland Guardians in the first round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday, July 11, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

The pick carries an approximate slot value of $4.53 million, according to MLB.com.

Peterson stands 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, and throws a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and touches 99 mph. MLB Pipeline grades his slider a 65 on the 20-80 scouting scale, his best pitch.

"I don't want to sound cocky or anything coming off of this, but I think I really have the potential to be a Cy Young top-end starter in MLB," Peterson told Sports Illustrated after the selection. "I know what I have, and I know that I haven't necessarily shown that in my performances so far, but I really do think I'm close to getting where I want to be."

His college stat line — a 5.03 career ERA with a 14-16 record across 47 starts — doesn't jump off the page. But Peterson struck out 284 batters in 216⅔ innings at Florida, and MLB analyst Lance Brozdowski said on the draft broadcast that those ERA numbers should be thrown "completely out the window," calling Cleveland one of the best pitching development organizations in baseball.

CBS Sports echoed that assessment, noting Peterson's fastball has "excellent ride" and that few teams match Cleveland's track record of developing arms.

Peterson is Florida's first pitcher taken in the first round since Hurston Waldrep went 24th to Atlanta in 2023, and the program's 21st all-time first-round selection.

Calvary Christian Sends a Second Arm to the First Round

Peterson wasn't the only Calvary Christian alum drafted in the first round Saturday. Hunter Dietz, who grew up in Trinity and pitched at Arkansas, went 35th overall to the New York Yankees. Head coach Greg Olsen coached both.

"Those guys are Calvary baseball legends," Olsen told the Tampa Bay Times. "They did so much for our program and their teammates."

Four players from Calvary Christian's 2023 state championship squad have now been drafted by Major League teams. Peterson and Dietz shared a rotation at the school alongside Landen Maroudis, a fourth-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2025.

Phillies Take a Second Palm Harbor Product on Day Two

Palm Harbor native Cooper Consiglio, a left-handed pitcher at NC State, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the ninth round on Sunday, July 12. Consiglio, a junior, was drafted after an improved 2026 season that followed a rough sophomore year.

Two Palm Harbor products were selected in the same draft weekend.

Peterson Faces a July 27 Deadline to Sign or Return to Florida

Peterson has until Monday, July 27, at 5 p.m. to sign with Cleveland or elect to return to college. Given the $4.53 million slot value attached to the 19th pick, a return to Florida would be unprecedented. No minor league assignment has been announced.
