Drivers heading to Honeymoon Island State Park can expect periodic lane closures for the next six months after Pinellas County began maintenance on the Dunedin Causeway Bridge on Monday, July 6, according to a City of Dunedin announcement.

The project is expected to continue through January 2027. Boaters will also face navigation restrictions during construction, including limited bridge openings.

The causeway on State Road 586 is the only road connecting the mainland to Honeymoon Island State Park, which attracted 1.77 million visitors in 2025, according to Islands.com. The park is about a 45-minute drive from downtown Tampa.

Crews replacing steel coatings and repairing bridge structure

Construction crews will remove and replace existing steel coatings and repair damaged structural steel on the bridge, according to the city's Facebook announcement.

The city did not disclose the project's cost or identify the contractor.

Motorists should expect temporary lane closures throughout the project.

Bridge openings restricted for boat traffic

During construction hours, the drawbridge will open only one leaf at a time, providing 6 feet of vertical clearance on the down span.

Outside work hours, the navigation channel will be cleared, but one span will continue to have a reduced 6-foot vertical clearance because of a containment system that will remain in place.

The restrictions could affect taller sailboats and sportfishing vessels, which may need to plan their trips accordingly through January 2027.

County provides contact information for questions

Pinellas County is accepting questions about the project by phone at 727-464-8900 or by email at [email protected].

Honeymoon Island State Park will remain open throughout construction. County officials advise drivers to allow extra travel time on the causeway, especially on weekends, until the project is completed in January 2027.
