The Dunedin Blue Jays collected 13 hits Wednesday, July 8, at TD Ballpark and still lost 8-2 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers after leaving 15 runners on base.
It was game two of a six-game set, and the numbers told a maddening story: Dunedin outhit Lakeland 13-11 yet couldn't convert traffic into runs when it mattered.
The lone highlight belonged to 19-year-old designated hitter Blaine Bullard, who went 2-for-4 with a walk and swiped his 30th stolen base of the 2026 season. That total leads the Toronto Blue Jays' entire farm system and ranked second in the Florida State League entering Wednesday's game, according to the team's game summary.
Bullard's RBI double in the third inning came off the bat at 103.9 mph. The game marked his second straight multi-hit outing and his team-leading 21st multi-hit game of the year.
He is one of just five teenagers in all of Minor League Baseball with at least seven home runs and 30 stolen bases in 2026, per the organization.
A record-setting bonus for a 12th-round pick
Toronto selected Bullard out of Klein Cain High School in Spring, Texas, in the 12th round of the 2025 MLB Draft and signed him for $1,697,500, the largest bonus ever given to a player drafted in that round, according to the club. Through 73 games in his professional debut season, the Toronto No. 14 prospect is batting .268/.340/.423 with eight home runs, 45 RBI, 78 hits, 123 total bases and those 30 steals.
His week only got better from there. Bullard was named Florida State League Player of the Week for July 7-12 after going 9-for-20 (.450) with two home runs, 11 RBI and a 1.420 OPS across six games against Lakeland. Five of his nine hits in the series went for extra bases, and he drove in a run in five of the six contests. He became the first position player and third Dunedin Blue Jay to earn FSL weekly honors in 2026.
Cook and Joseph add secondary offense
Center fielder Jake Cook went 2-for-5 with his 14th stolen base of the season, logging his second consecutive multi-hit game. Right fielder Jean Joseph posted a season-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with a walk. Joseph has recorded a hit in four of his last five games.
Neither performance was enough to overcome the 15 stranded baserunners.
Threshers come to town next
The Blue Jays return to TD Ballpark for a three-game series against the Clearwater Threshers, the Phillies' Single-A affiliate, beginning Saturday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m.
