Palm Harbor University's volleyball team swept Wiregrass Ranch 3-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Class 6A-District 9 tournament semifinal.
The victory capped a strong district run for the Hurricanes. PHU opened the tournament Oct. 13 with a 3-0 quarterfinal win over Armwood, then topped Wiregrass Ranch the following night, according to MaxPreps. The Hurricanes fell to Plant 3-1 in the district final Oct. 15, finishing as the runner-up.
PHU enters the FHSAA Class 6A regional bracket as the No. 5 seed in Region 3. The Hurricanes travel to No. 4 Vero Beach for a regional quarterfinal Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m., according to TCPalm. Vero Beach earned the hosting rights after winning the District 12-6A title in a five-set match over Jupiter.
The Hurricanes are 19-6 overall. They have won 55 sets against 17 lost this season, posting a .228 hitting percentage and averaging 16 kills per set.
The semifinal win over Wiregrass Ranch snapped an 11-match winning streak for the Bulls, who entered the district tournament at 19-5. Sophomore hitter Brooklynn Lynch, the Bulls' standout, piled up 313 kills, 197 digs, 40 service aces and 38 blocks this season, the Tampa Bay Beacons reported. The 5-foot-11 Lynch is only the second player in Wiregrass Ranch history to top 300 kills, joining Grace Olsen, who set the school record of 331 in 2013.
Wiregrass Ranch coach Reagan Hopp told the Beacons that Lynch's growth as a leader has driven the team's success. "She is one of our best servers and passers, and she is our best hitter," Hopp told the Beacons.
Despite the district semifinal loss, the Bulls earned a regional playoff berth as the No. 8 seed in Region 3-6A. They traveled to top-seeded Venice for a quarterfinal Oct. 21.
A win at Vero Beach would send the Hurricanes to the regional semifinal.
