The Palm Harbor University Hurricanes carry a three-game losing streak into their Friday, Oct. 23, district finale at Strawberry Crest, where both teams enter 0-2 in 6A District 11 play.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Strawberry Crest High School in Dover.
PHU (2-6, 0-2) has dropped three straight, including district losses to Alonso (51-0 on Sept. 25) and Steinbrenner (41-21 on Oct. 9), according to MaxPreps. The Hurricanes have scored 117 points and allowed 183 on the season.
The Chargers (1-7, 0-2) are in a similar rut. Strawberry Crest has been shut out in back-to-back district games, falling 49-0 to Alonso on Oct. 9 and 41-0 to Plant City in their most recent outing, according to MaxPreps. The Chargers' lone win came Sept. 10 against King, 35-18.
Friday's game is the last district contest of the season for both squads. The district title is already out of reach. Steinbrenner and Alonso, both 2-0 in league play, meet Friday night in what Yahoo Sports described as the District 11-6A championship game. Both have beaten PHU and Strawberry Crest.
For teams outside the FHSAA's Open Division field, winning a district secures an automatic regional tournament bid and home-field advantage in the regional quarterfinal against an at-large qualifier, Yahoo Sports reported. What a third-place district finish versus a fourth-place finish means for either team's postseason path is less clear. The FHSAA uses head-to-head results to break two-team ties and playoff rankings to settle three-way deadlocks.
Strawberry Crest's offense runs through sophomore quarterback ZIjohn Stallworth, who averages 60.1 rushing yards per game, and sophomore receiver Santana Sheppard, who leads the team with 56.1 receiving yards per game and 440 total return yards, per MaxPreps. Senior running back Tre Feliciano leads the Chargers with six total touchdowns. On defense, senior linebacker Brice Robinson averages 9.1 tackles per game.
The Hurricanes have fared better on the road this season, going 2-3 away from home compared to 0-3 at home. Their two wins came at Parrish Community (26-7 on Sept. 11) and at Hollins (47-8 on Sept. 18).
PHU closes the regular season Oct. 30 at home against Dunedin. Strawberry Crest travels to Lennard the same night.
