Mikey McGurk is 16 years old and already training against professional defenders.

The Palm Harbor teenager signed a USL academy contract with Sarasota Paradise FC on Tuesday, Aug. 4, becoming the youngest player in the first-year club's history to earn that distinction. The deal keeps McGurk's college eligibility intact while opening a door to official USL League One matches.

McGurk, who played youth soccer for the Clearwater Chargers and the West Florida Flames, has scored six goals and added three assists for the Paradise U20 squad since it began competition in March. Capable of playing striker or winger, he caught the coaching staff's attention with his versatility and output.

He already got a taste of the professional level. On July 29, McGurk logged minutes with the Sarasota Paradise first team in a mid-season friendly against Portland Hearts of Pine, competing against a fully professional back line.

McGurk said he was grateful for the opportunity and thanked his coaches, teammates and parents for their support in the club's announcement.

McGurk was one of five teenagers signed to academy contracts that day. The others: Joshua "Aran" Spengler (18, Riverview), Lucas Fredericks (19, Sebring), Eeli Elovaara (17, Wilmington, N.C.) and Tristan Frederickson (18, Naples). All five had already contributed to the Paradise U20 team in UPSL play and the USL Academy league before earning their deals.

U20 head coach Mark Ward, who also serves as first-team assistant, praised the group's development.

"These young men have shown professionalism and maturity throughout the season both in the reserve team environment and first team environment," Ward said. "We are excited to offer this opportunity to these talented young men and show the community that our pathway is thriving."

Sarasota Paradise competes in USL League One, the third tier of the American soccer pyramid. Technical director and head coach Mika Elovaara described the club's Pathway to Pro Academy in a July 20 announcement as the first program on Florida's west coast offering a full development track from U8 to professional. The academy launched for the 2026-27 season.

McGurk and the four other signees are now eligible for first-team selection when Sarasota Paradise resumes USL League One play.
