Giancarlo Gonzalez spent five years as an Army paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. On March 4, the Dunedin veteran walked into congressional offices on Capitol Hill to lobby for stronger GI Bill benefits for student veterans like himself.
Gonzalez, a member of SPC Zachary L. Shannon VFW Post 2550 in Dunedin, completed the 2025-26 VFW-Student Veterans of America Fellowship, a nine-month program that trains student veterans to advocate for policy changes in Washington, D.C. The fellowship culminated at the 2026 VFW Washington Conference, where Gonzalez and other fellows met face-to-face with their state representatives.
"In the Army, you learn to communicate quickly, stay focused on the mission and operate within a structured chain of command," Gonzalez told VFW magazine for its July/August 2026 issue. "Sitting down with congressional members felt similar, just in a different environment."
Gonzalez served with the 325th Infantry Regiment from 2007 to 2012. He is finishing a degree in building design and construction management at St. Petersburg College and also works in real estate, where he channels his energy into the HUD-VASH program to help homeless veterans find stable housing. That work is personal for him.
